I mean, you've paid for the diagnostic, but why would you try to sell your car when your mechanic has told everyone it won't move?

If you get a good review like this one from this reader, I would think that people may not read it, but they'd be more likely to keep your name in mind when you come out with a new one. As for the Nicholls, I had two friends win and they made the rounds to all the agencies, and... one of them is raising funds for his own movies now. The other's out of the game.

Your BL reader seemed like (s)he was fair but unspecific--about as much as you could expect for $50. More specific and your cost would be in the $100s.

radiantabyss, I sympathize with your plight. I just got two dissenting opinions on my work and I don't know who to believe. The guy who can get me repped? We argue about stuff. It's good to learn to defend your work, and it also can teach you to measure your words. And the guy whose tastes in writing are more strict, doesn't 'drink the merlot', can't do anything for me. So who do you trust? If you find yourself at an impasse selling a particular script, put it in a drawer for later, slap band-aids on, and strap yourself in for the next script. Keep going. Don't linger over how you got hurt. That's something I've had to learn from time to time, even when I did have an agent (he got fired, but that's another story). Each time it gets easier.

In the end, you have to look at what happened and put the script in the drawer for later. You will eventually make headway if you keep trying and improving and seeing where others think you went wrong. (That doesn't mean you're wrong; it just means they're not buying it right now).

The one stumbling block is that you're a name right now and not a face. Someday you won't be. When you're flavor of the month, everyone wants a cone, even if it's not first off the tap. Obviously, these were written by two different people who had different approaches to the material, but it was confusing as hell. Given the conflict between the notes, and a desire to write to your own sensibility, which way do you turn? To ignore the notes and stick to your guns seems reductive and at odds with the collaborative nature of the medium, but can you put your heart into making changes you don't believe in? That seems to be screenwriters' lot, for the most part.

I've left the script up because I think it's a good read and a good example of my writing, (and I often wonder/hope if it's simply a case of someone whose sensibilities overlap with mine finding it) but have moved on to another project. I'm sure that at some point I'll return to it with a degree of objectivity and some perspective.radiantabysshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05556594952872230450noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-39293853817763751.post-9458865392234629822014-08-27T12:29:32.940-07:002014-08-27T12:29:32.940-07:00The Black List evaluations don't have much val...The Black List evaluations don't have much value as notes. When you buy an evaluation, you're paying for a chance to get a score of 8 or higher and the exposure that comes with the industry email blast. If you're score comes in below an 8, you're wasting your money if you continue to host the script.

Black List gives you an opportunity to see where you stack up against industry standards. Some will bitch about the readers etc. but it seems to reflect real life. Real life, at least, as imagined by this wannabe in the boonies.

Considering where you are -- geographically and career/talent wise -- I don't think the Black List would be of much use.

Congrats on Nicholl finish, by the way.

Clinthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17161753621234254957noreply@blogger.com
